After a successful trip to Rugby, well apart from the football, we had a look at going to Kettering via Luton on the train. We met up for breakfast at the Scandinavian Cafe in High Town in Luton, a short walk from the station.
The short train journey was made to feel somewhat longer, due to Kev's continual chatter, and our trip to the pub was prolonged by Scottie's dodgy SatNav. Still, we did get to see the fountain that the locals must worship as it is caged off to prevent you from touching the sacred liquid.
We eventually arrived at the Cherry Tree to the sound of the Blues filtering over the music system and the helpful staff talked us through their fine beers. Hop Back Summer Lightning, Potbelly Best, Potbelly Bellowhead Hedonism and Oakham Ales Inferno were all on offer and well looked after. Hedonism was a hit, although Kev did managed to upset the barman by saying his beer smelt of armpits!
One of the locals was kind enough to let us have his taxi to get to the ground which is a few miles out of town in the village of Burton Latimer. Kettering Town, have played at many grounds locally, but at the moment seem to be getting away with playing in a park. Not sure how they managed to get a ground grading for the Southern League.
After upsetting the locals and losing 2-0, Kettering celebrated like they had won the FA Cup Final and the twat on the PA kept repeating the score like a stuck record. The Regiment are a patient bunch, but this idiot certainly tested them. A quick taxi ride back into town to the Cherry Tree was most welcome. Tom was sent of a food run and we popped next door to the Old Market Inn to watch the FA Cup Semi-Final between Arsenal and Wigan. The Old Market Inn was a pretty poor Greene King outlet and perhaps we should have stayed put in the Cherry Tree.
The return journey was a little quieter, as we reflected on our loss. Once back in Luton, we jumped on the Busway back to Dunstable and drowned our sorrows back in The Gate and discussed how the remaining games of the season would pan out. The more we drank, the more ridiculous it got. The last three matches are going to be epic!
